Everyone knows about Gastown, Yaletown, and Kits. But Vancouver has dozens of lesser-known neighbourhoods that deliver just as much charm, character, and cool—without the crowds or the markup. If you’re looking to explore a more local side of the city, here’s where to go.

Mount Pleasant

Once industrial, now indie-central. Mount Pleasant is full of craft breweries, art studios, vintage shops, and wall-to-wall murals. Start at Main and 10th, grab a coffee at Kafka’s or a pastry from Purebread, then walk up and down Main Street between 10th and 16th. There’s shopping, people-watching, and plenty of patios.

Commercial Drive

The Drive has been called Vancouver’s most eclectic street—and for good reason. You’ll find everything from Italian delis to Ethiopian restaurants, record shops, community theatres, and grungy bars with surprisingly good cocktails. Spend the afternoon hopping between bookstores, coffee shops, and thrift stores. Stick around for dinner and a show at the Rio.

Hastings-Sunrise

Quieter than Commercial but just as full of character, Hastings-Sunrise is home to small-batch bakeries, family-owned restaurants, and some of the city’s best mountain views. Stop at Laughing Bean for coffee, grab lunch at Laksa King, and walk through nearby Hastings Park or up to New Brighton Beach for a skyline sunset.

Strathcona

One of Vancouver’s oldest neighbourhoods, Strathcona is full of historic homes, community gardens, and artists’ spaces. It’s walkable and unpolished, in the best way. Check out Union Market for sandwiches and snacks, walk the area’s mural-lined streets, and swing by The Garden Strathcona for coffee and local goods.

Marpole

Tucked in the city’s south end, Marpole often gets overlooked—but it’s a quiet gem. You’ll find riverside trails, peaceful parks, and a surprisingly diverse food scene, including some of the best pho and Korean fried chicken in town. It's a great spot to escape the downtown buzz and experience a slower pace.

Moodyville (North Van)

Just over the bridge, Moodyville is on the rise. It offers easy access to the Spirit Trail, a walkable path that hugs the shoreline all the way to Lonsdale. Pack a picnic, walk to the pier, or grab lunch at one of the breweries nearby. House of Funk, Shaketown, and Beere are all local favourites. And of course, you’re never far from Capilano Suspension Bridge Park when you’re in North Vancouver, if you’re in need of a little adventure (annual passes are the same price as a day admission for BC residents).

Forest Hills (Burnaby)

Not technically Vancouver, but worth the stretch. Forest Hills sits near Burnaby Mountain and offers a mix of forest trails, mountain views, and family-friendly green space. Hike the SFU trails, visit Burnaby Mountain Park for views and totem poles, or catch golden hour from the Horizon restaurant patio.

Vancouver’s best-kept secrets aren’t hidden—they’re just hanging out in neighbourhoods you may not have heard of yet. Whether you’re looking for a laid-back afternoon, a new date spot, or your next go-to bakery, these underrated communities are worth the detour. Grab a transit pass, lace up your walking shoes, and start exploring.
